Octopus Energy Benefits: Rewards, Free Electricity & More

Discover the benefits of being an Octopus Energy customer, from Octoplus rewards and Saving Sessions to free electricity, smart tariffs and the Octopus Home Mini.

Being an Octopus Energy customer can give you access to more than just an energy tariff.

Eligible customers can earn rewards through Octoplus, get paid for changing when they use electricity through Saving Sessions, unlock opportunities for free electricity, and track their home’s energy use in near real time with the Octopus Home Mini.

Octopus also offers a wide range of smart tariffs, a feature-rich app, customer referral rewards and additional support for customers who need help with their energy bills.

Here are some of the main benefits of being with Octopus Energy and where to find out more.

Not every benefit is available to every customer.

Many of Octopus’s smart rewards require a compatible electricity smart meter with half-hourly readings enabled, while some schemes depend on your tariff, location or technology.

Octoplus rewards

Octoplus is Octopus Energy’s rewards programme for eligible smart-meter customers.

Rather than simply rewarding you for remaining a customer, Octoplus combines traditional loyalty perks with rewards for using electricity more flexibly.

You can earn Octopoints, which can be converted into credit towards your energy account, while other rewards can include free treats, discount codes, prize draws and giveaways.

Octoplus has also introduced a Monday Scratchcard, giving members regular opportunities to win rewards.

What can you get through Octoplus?

Rewards change over time, but Octoplus can include:

  • Octopoints that can be converted towards your energy bill
  • Saving Sessions rewards
  • free food and drink offers
  • discount codes
  • weekly prizes
  • Monday Scratchcard rewards
  • special promotions and giveaways
  • access to other customer-only schemes

Octopus says Octoplus members had access to more than £300 of potential rewards during the previous year, although the amount any individual customer actually receives will depend on which rewards they qualify for and use.

Saving Sessions

Saving Sessions reward customers for changing when they use electricity.

There are currently two main types.

Power Down

During a Power Down, Octopus asks you to reduce your electricity use compared with your normal consumption.

These sessions generally happen when electricity demand is high.

Reduce your consumption successfully and you can earn Octopoints.

Power Up

A Power Up works in the opposite direction.

When there is plenty of electricity available — often because renewable generation is high — Octopus can reward you for using more electricity than normal.

This could be a useful time to:

  • charge an EV
  • charge a home battery
  • run the dishwasher
  • do laundry
  • heat water
  • move other flexible electricity use

Power Ups replaced the previous Free Electricity Saving Sessions in 2026, with customers now generally earning Octopoints for extra qualifying consumption.

Saving Sessions are available through Octoplus and require suitable half-hourly smart-meter data.

Free electricity opportunities

Octopus customers can still sometimes get genuinely free electricity — and in some circumstances electricity prices can even fall below zero.

There isn’t one permanent free-electricity scheme.

Instead, opportunities can appear through several different Octopus products and promotions.

These can include:

Weekend Happy Hours

Successful Power Down Saving Sessions can currently help Octoplus members unlock periods of free weekend electricity through Weekend Happy Hours.

Postcode Power Ups

Customers in certain eligible areas can occasionally receive periods where qualifying electricity use is completely free.

Availability depends on where you live and local electricity-network conditions.

Agile Plunge Pricing

Customers on Agile Octopus can occasionally see electricity prices fall below zero.

When that happens, you’re effectively paid to use electricity during the negative-price period.

These opportunities aren’t guaranteed, but they’re one of the more unusual advantages of Octopus’s approach to smart energy.

Octopus Home Mini

The Octopus Home Mini is a small device that connects your compatible smart meter to your home Wi-Fi.

Instead of waiting for smart-meter information to arrive the following day, the Home Mini sends electricity readings to Octopus roughly every 10 seconds.

That lets you see your electricity consumption in near real time through the Octopus app.

You can use it to see what happens when you:

  • turn appliances on and off
  • start charging an electric car
  • switch on an immersion heater
  • charge a home battery
  • increase or reduce heating demand

For homes with solar panels, compatible setups can also show live electricity export.

Octopus offers the Home Mini free to customers with suitable smart-meter setups, making it particularly useful if you’re interested in understanding exactly where your electricity is going.

Access to Octopus smart tariffs

One of the biggest reasons to consider Octopus is its range of smart energy tariffs.

Rather than offering only conventional fixed and variable products, Octopus has developed tariffs around different technologies and ways of using energy.

For example:

These tariffs won’t suit every home, but they give customers considerably more choice over how and when they buy electricity.

Homes with EVs, solar panels, batteries and heat pumps can potentially build their tariff around the technology they already own.

The Octopus Energy app

The Octopus app is another useful part of being a customer, particularly if you have a smart meter.

You can use it to keep track of your account and energy use without needing to contact customer services for everyday changes.

Depending on your setup, the app can let you:

  • view electricity and gas consumption
  • see daily, weekly, monthly and yearly usage
  • view half-hourly electricity data
  • monitor live electricity use with an Octopus Home Mini
  • check your account balance
  • view bills and statements
  • manage your Direct Debit amount
  • change your Direct Debit payment date
  • submit meter readings
  • access Octoplus
  • join Saving Sessions
  • manage compatible smart tariffs and connected devices

For customers on dynamic tariffs or with low-carbon technology, the app becomes particularly useful because much more of the account can be managed digitally.

Highly rated by Octopus customers

Customer service is another reason people may consider Octopus.

Octopus currently has a 4.8 out of 5 “Excellent” rating on Trustpilot, based on more than 860,000 reviews, with Trustpilot displaying a 5-out-of-5 TrustScore.

Ratings can change over time, but Octopus has maintained a very high volume of positive customer feedback despite growing into Britain’s largest household energy supplier.

That doesn’t mean every customer will have the same experience, but it provides a useful indication of overall customer sentiment.

Octopus Energy is also a Which? Recommended Provider for energy in 2026.

Which? assesses suppliers using both customer feedback and its own assessment of supplier practices rather than relying only on tariff prices.

Octopus is one of four energy companies to receive Recommended Provider status for 2026.

It was also named a Which? Eco Provider for energy in 2026, reflecting its performance against Which?’s environmental assessment.

That gives Octopus independent recognition beyond its own customer reviews and marketing.

Referral rewards

Existing Octopus customers also receive their own referral link.

If someone uses that link to join Octopus for their home, Octopus currently gives:

£50 energy credit to the existing customer

and

£50 energy credit to the new customer.

The new customer needs to sign up through the qualifying referral link, successfully move onto supply and make their first Direct Debit payment before the reward is issued.

For existing customers, the referral link can be found within the Octopus account.

For somebody considering joining Octopus, it’s worth making sure any eligible joining offer is applied during the initial switch rather than attempting to add it afterwards.

More control over your energy account

Octopus gives customers a relatively high level of self-service control over their account.

For example, Direct Debit customers can manage their payment amount and payment date through their online account or app.

Octopus also provides a Balance Forecast tool that shows how changing your monthly Direct Debit could affect your predicted account balance over the following year.

For customers with functioning smart meters, readings can normally be submitted automatically, reducing the need for manual meter readings and helping bills reflect actual consumption.

This doesn’t guarantee that bills or payments will always be correct, but it gives customers more information and control over how their account is managed.

Support if you’re struggling with energy bills

Customer benefits aren’t only about rewards.

Octopus also operates Octo Assist, its dedicated financial-support fund for customers struggling to afford energy.

The fund has grown to £40 million and support is tailored to individual circumstances.

Help can include measures such as:

  • bill support
  • standing charge assistance
  • debt support
  • energy-saving measures
  • electric blankets
  • referrals to additional financial support

Octopus has also partnered with financial-support services to help identify benefits, grants and other schemes customers may be entitled to.

Support isn’t automatically available to everyone and eligibility depends on individual circumstances.

If you’re struggling with your energy bills, it’s worth contacting Octopus directly rather than waiting until debt becomes unmanageable.

Smart meters unlock more of the benefits

You don’t necessarily need a smart meter simply to be supplied by Octopus.

However, many of the most interesting Octopus features do require one.

A compatible electricity smart meter with half-hourly readings can unlock:

  • Octoplus
  • Saving Sessions
  • smart tariffs
  • detailed energy-use data
  • Octopus Home Mini functionality
  • time-of-use pricing
  • smart EV charging
  • smart solar and battery tariffs

If you’re joining Octopus without a compatible smart meter, you can usually move your supply first and then arrange a smart-meter installation.

Is Octopus Energy worth switching to for the benefits?

The extra features are a genuine part of the Octopus proposition, but they shouldn’t be considered separately from your actual energy tariff.

Someone with a conventional meter and limited interest in smart energy may get less value from Octoplus, Saving Sessions or dynamic tariffs than someone with a smart meter, EV, solar panels or battery.

For a smart-meter household, however, being with Octopus can unlock a much broader ecosystem:

tariffs → smart-meter data → Octoplus → Saving Sessions → rewards → connected home technology

The best reason to switch should still be that the overall combination of tariff, service and features works for your household.

The rewards are an additional benefit rather than a substitute for comparing your energy costs.
