Why do Octopus Tracker prices change every day?
Octopus Tracker follows wholesale energy prices much more closely than a conventional tariff.
A new electricity and gas unit rate is calculated for each day using wholesale market data and the pricing formula attached to your version of Tracker.
The rate you pay does not change throughout the individual day. Tracker has one electricity unit rate and one gas unit rate for that day.
This is different from Agile Octopus, where electricity prices change throughout the day.
Because Tracker responds more quickly to wholesale energy markets, its prices can move both below and above conventional tariff rates.
Why do Tracker prices vary by region?
There is no single Octopus Tracker electricity price that applies everywhere in Great Britain.
Tracker prices vary by region because some of the costs involved in supplying energy differ depending on where you live.
That is why this tool asks for your postcode before displaying your rates.
Your postcode is used to determine your pricing region so the dashboard can show the relevant electricity and gas prices for your area.
When are tomorrow’s Octopus Tracker prices available?
Where a rate for the following day is available, the dashboard will show it alongside today’s price.
If tomorrow’s rate has not yet been published, the dashboard will show that it is not available rather than estimating a price.
Tracker prices depend on wholesale market data, so tomorrow’s rate may not always become available at exactly the same time each day.
The dashboard therefore shows the latest available pricing data.
What does the Tracker price history show?
Looking at a single day’s Tracker price only tells you part of the story.
The historical charts let you see how electricity and gas prices have moved over the previous:
- 30 days
- 3 months
- 6 months
- 12 months
This makes it easier to put today’s rate into context.
For example, today’s Tracker price could be higher than yesterday’s while still being below its longer-term average.
